Here’s what Angela said about planning the party- “My son Isaiah recently turned 4 and is mid-way through his first year of Preschool. Seeing how much he enjoys going to school and learning new things, I decided to throw him a Bookworm themed birthday party. We invited a few of his little friends who are also in their first year of school, plus their moms – for a play date party!

I set up my dining room to look like a fun, kid friendly library – complete with plenty of balloons, colorful books, and a comfy reading nook. Each child was asked to bring their favorite book. When the guests arrived they were given a bow tie / hair bow clip and a pair of ‘reading glasses’ to wear.

The children’s activities included coloring bookmarks and ‘writing’ their very own story (with the help of a package of stickers and the writing skills of the moms!). We also had story time, when we read the books the children had brought and the stories they wrote! It was so cute to hear what those little minds thought up!

We shared a light meal of meat cheese & crackers, fruit and vegetables – which were served in brightly colored paper bowls. For desert, each guest was given an individual dirt cake (complete with gummy worms) in lieu of a cupcake or piece of cake. Other treats included cherry sour balls and adorably decorated sugar cookies.

At the end of the party each child gathered up their favors in a beautiful personalized book bag.

This was a small party which was quite simple to put together, and the children LOVED it! I would recommend this party theme to anyone with young children!”

This is what Katie said about planning the party- “A movie party theme was inspired out of necessity! We have a large group of friends and family and I had to come up with a theme that would entertain and accommodate a February indoor party for 50 guests, 25 of them children between the ages of 4-6. With a goal to wow my guests (b/c I do style parties for a living), make it fun for both big and little guests, and keep it fuss-free, I split our party onto two levels to keep the crowd flowing.
I found traditional red, white, and black movie party printables on Etsy, but since this party was for a girl, I wanted to add in a tad bit of girly and decided to throw in pops of yellow. And, as a party stylist with a room full of props, I incorporated many of the party décor pieces I already had on hand, which turned this theme into a Vintage Movie Party.

Now, who doesn’t love movie snacks? This was such a hit for the birthday girl and all her friends. I created a movie concession stand stocked with fresh popped popcorn, jumbo salted pretzels, a selection of candy (mini sized of course), popcorn pops, cupcakes, and beverages. Just like the movies, our little guests got in line and each received a snack caddy, which they then filled with whatever movie treats they wanted. On the way down to the “movie theatre”, each guest grabbed a sheet and took a seat in front of the big screen. While the children were entertained downstairs, our adult guests were able to relax, mingle and enjoy the bar and restocked concession stand upstairs.”

Here’s what Heldy had to say about planning the party- “This year when planning my daughter’s 11th Birthday Party, she was very involved. Her two requisites, it had to be unique and it had to include her favorite color, PURPLE. I have been a scrapbooker since she was born, and one day rushing through a local craft store I spotted these lovely Smash Books. So I brought home one to show her, a pretty one with a purple spine and an embossed peace sign on the cover. She was sold! The idea of ‘Smashing’ was new to both of us, but it was basically like taking that shoebox full of memorabilia and ‘gluing it down, and smashing it into’ the pages of this pretty book.

I started working on the invitations with Amy from Sassaby. I gave her some ideas I had and some specific items and colors my daughter wanted and Amy did an amazing job creating the invites, cupcake toppers, door signs, and cards for the take home gifts.

We focused on the Smashing and the items the girls would be using. We put together a table for them to sit at and covered that with some Kraft paper. Each girl received a Smash book that had a little card with the definition of Smash that we had printed and tied with twine, as well as a paper bag that we ran through the printer, with their name printed on it. This bag held her “Smash items” and also served as a place marker. Each bag contained an array of little Smashing items like journaling cards, Smash band, paper clips, washi tape, colored cardstock, feathers, stickers, adhesive gems, etc. I set out colored markers and pencils. I also set up an additional table with scrapbooking tools. Since my daughter wanted this to be a surprise for her friends (they had no idea what a Smash Party was when they got here), I had contacted each mom and sworn them to secrecy. They each sent a sealed envelope with photos and memorabilia for each girl to work with on their Smash Books. They were so excited to open their envelopes and search through their ‘stuff’. I also printed a special ‘Conversation with’ sheet personalized for each girl with their name, month/year and their age (inspired by Ali Edwards) as a fun keepsake to look back on.

We took the girls outside for a fun photo shoot with some fun props from PhotoBoothgirls. My daughter thought it would be a fun idea to include some photos with the thank you cards so her friends can add them to their Smash Books.

As a take home gift we gave the girls these cute purple plastic totes to store their Smash items in. Lauri from Fresh Cuts by Lauri Beth created the vinyls we used on the front of the totes. She also made several die-cuts that we used in the décor and cupcake topper mustaches.
Since the party took place after lunch time, we basically had cupcakes and snacks. My daughter requested Red Velvet Cupcakes, so that’s what I made for her, as well as Rice Krispie treats dipped in chocolate, fruit kabobs, popcorn, pretzels and cheese. We had a “purple” punch for the girls to drink out of their daisy lidded mason jars with pretty striped paper straws.

I have to admit, they all had a great time, some didn’t want to leave until they finished their books! I’ve had lovely messages from mom’s thanking me for introducing their daughter’s to Smashing.

As for the Birthday Girl, she couldn’t be happier…..she’s on her second Smash Book and still going strong. There’s already talk about “Smashing” play dates;).”

Here’s what Jen said about the party- “When you have a gorgeous & glamorous friend named Tiffany who just so happens to be expecting a baby boy, hosting a “Breakfast with Tiffany” baby shower is a no-brainer. (This theme is so versatile! Think: bridal shower, baby shower, birthday and more! Substitute any special mom or bride-to-be’s name for equally as much fun!)

Inspired by the 1961 film by a similar name, starring the beautiful Audrey Hepburn, my friend Vivian and I wanted to create a pretty breakfast setting with pops of glitz and glamour. We recruited some of the best in the graphic design, event planning, baking, clothing & accessory businesses to help us with this special celebration. (Be sure to check out the amazing vendor list below to recreate our look!) A big “thank you” to our talented friend, Rochelle Pettingill for capturing the fun of the day with her photography.

Invitation Suite:

Guests received gorgeous invitations designed by Maureen of Anders Ruff Custom Designs inviting them to come join us for “Breakfast with Tiffany”. I love the vintage pram style baby buggy logo used throughout the designs. Because our guest of honor requested a diaper shower, Maureen created a darling enclosure card (in lieu of baby registry info) with a little poem inviting guests to help Tiffany stock her diaper & wipe supply. The invitation suite, including the custom address wrap were so classy with the Moroccan design, decorative frame, flourishes & formal script.

Decor:

Guests were greeted with this beautiful vinyl “Breakfast at Tiffany’s sign when they entered (Ten23 Designs).  This was such a fun detail to set the stage for a themed event. Breakfast was served from a buffet counter, covered in coordinating tablecloths and accented with a lovely tissue fringe garland (One Stylish Party) & fresh flower ranunculas arrangements. We added some fun special touches, such as vinyl baby buggy accents on the vases and utensil holders (Ten23 Designs). Some of my favorite details were the napkins wrapped in gorgeous ribbon with little silver carriage charms. A yummy white chocolate baby pop accompanied each one! (Something Chic did an amazing job on those details!)

A variety of beverage options were available from our beverage station. One of my favorite DIY ideas from this event was the circle garland we created by punching out several circle sizes from coordinating cardstock and stitching them together with a sewing machine. It added some bling and interest to the large sliding glass window overlooking a very cloudy day. Notice the cute printable bunting? It’s part of the coordinating printable package from Anders Ruff Custom Designs.

Apothecary jars were dressed up with rhinestone studded ribbon & party printables and filled with coordinating shimmer gumballs from SmashCake Studio. (Gumballs are a great way to tie in party colors & can also serve as a take home favor.) Along with another darling printable banner and perfect little blue satin bow wrapped boxes, the mantle was decorated with the most adorable baby buggy favors custom made by Piggy Bank Parties. (We filled these with coordinating wrapped mini chocolate bars for guests to take home.) The focal point of our mantle was a custom designed platter with vinyl lettering & coordinating baby buggy (Creative Designs by Toni ).

Throughout the event space, we carried the diaper shower concept. A diaper shaped bunting hung from a sofa table. A beautiful 3-tiered custom diaper cake was the centerpiece at the welcome table. A custom crafted diaper bag, designed by SookEe Designs was filled with beautiful newborn essentials and accessories from talented vendors ( Mainely Applique, A Piece of Crochet, & Baybloom. From minkie blankets, to appliqued onesies and burp cloths to a tie/bow tie combo and a hand crocheted diaper cover & bow tie.
Our decor even carried over to the guest of honor’s children. Custom hair accessories were made for the beautiful daughters of the expectant mother by Giddy Up & Grow. It was fun to have a few photos taken of our sweet friend and her daughters. Doesn’t the confetti balloon and tassel garland add such an element of fun to their photo? (One Stylish Party)

Food & Drink:

With a guest list of over 60, our greatest challenge with this event was coming up with a breakfast menu that was A.) palate pleasing B.) affordable and C.) manageable. After all, we wanted to be able to ‘enjoy’ breakfast with Tiffany too. I think you will find our menu fit these perameters nicely.

Menu:

Petite pancake stacks with mint leaf & blueberry garnish & syrup drizzle accessorized with printable party flags from Anders Ruff’s collection & pearl accents
French toast sticks with syrup sauce served in petite glasses accented with printable 1″ monogram circle accents
Bacon skewers (kept warm in a chafing dish)
Sausage links (kept warm in a chafing dish)
Mini Quiche served in tasting spoons
Fresh fruit cups served in accessorized individual portion cups. Aren’t the scallop labels cute? You can find them in Anders Ruff’s printable package.

Mini Yogurt granola parfaits served in dessert parfait glasses & embellished with ribbon & 1″ circle monograms from AR’s printable package
Homemade muffins (banana, blueberry and cinnamon) served in polka dot muffin cups
Cinnamon Roll ‘Rattles’ (created with Glitterstix from Desserts & Designs).
Powdered sugar donut towers (an easy but impressive DIY project)
Beverages included: 1% milk, orange juice, apple juice, white grape juice and mango juice. Beverage glasses were dressed up with coordinating labels with fun striped straws accented by blinged out party flags.

Dessert Table:

If you want to excite guests, be sure to have a take away dessert table. Because our shower was an open house style brunch, we wanted a beautiful display of desserts that guests could nibble on during the shower, but could also take to go. We created the beautiful background using our DIY PVC pipe backdrop stand (see tutorial here) and some inexpensive curtain panels from IKEA. An old picture frame received a makeover with a coat of silver spray paint and was a perfect focal point for our 16 x20 welcome sign (printed for a few dollars at Office Depot). Most of the decor and serving trays were gathered from things I had on hand. The tiered stands were an inexpensive DIY project using 3 different sizes of centerpiece mirrors from Wholesale Event Solutions. I simply attached the mirrors to glass candlesticks from the Dollar Tree. They were so easy to put together and worked perfectly to hold beautiful custom desserts made by Cakealicious by Reem, Evie and Mallow, Fondant Flinger & Edible Details. Another tiered stand held shiny silver chargers from Wholesale Event Solutions, filled with additional sweet treats from Flour Child and others previously mentioned. Notice the exquisite blossom & petite cups that the meringues, truffles and cake balls were displayed in (Via Blossom). Silver trays were home to beautiful baby onesie cookies baked and decorated by Flour Child. And of course, the beautiful cake by 4 Kids Cakes was the main attraction. It was as equally delicious as it was beautiful with delicate sugar flowers and beautiful fondant detailing. The cake was almost entirely edible from top to bottom.

Shower Activity:

Most of our guests prefer socializing over organized shower games. Our open house style shower allowed plenty of time for eating & gabbing. However, we did want to leave our guest of honor with a fun remembrance of her special day. Guests were invited to leave a sweet message for the mom-to-be and baby on these adorable diaper notes made by Anders Ruff. At the end of the shower, we drew 2 diaper notes to receive a door prize– these darling little black purse manicure sets from Wholesale Event Solutions .

Favors:

Guests certainly didn’t leave empty handed. Beautiful favor boxes contributed by Val at Greyson Design housed scrumptious cupcakes baked by 4Kids Cakes & embellished with satin ribbon and custom thank you tags. Guests also had the option to fill the adorable baby buggy favor boxes (Piggy Bank Parties)with treats from the dessert table.
Breakfast with Tiffany was enjoyed by all!

Staff TEACHER Appreciation Week Superhero Party!

Staff Appreciation Week Superhero Party via Kara's Party Ideas KarasPartyIdeas.com

This inspiring STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK SUPERHERO THEMED PARTY was submitted by Maegan Birr of Scrapaholics.

What a fabulous idea! This wonderful party took place in the teachers lounge at school. Each day the teachers enjoyed a different element of being “super heroes” (Monday- “POP” popcorn bar, etc). See the full party details at the bottom of this post!

The ideas in this superhero staff appreciation week that I like best are:

  • The comic book style poster prints of the staff members wearing superhero capes and masks
  • The popcorn bar served in large glass jars
  • The Wonder Woman Rice Krispy pops
  • and MORE!
Party Styling- Maegan Birr of Scrapaholics and Simply Styled Home

Teacher Photos/Posters by John Wolfe (no link)

Capes/Mask- Kid Kapers
Fondant Cupcake Toppers- Three Monkey’s Cakery
Super M Sugar Cookies- Sweet Tweets
Rice Krispy Pops- Wickedly Whipped
Items used in this party available in Kara’s Party Ideas Shop:

Here’s what Maegan said about planning the event- “A week and a half before Superhero Staff Appreciation Week, all of the teachers and staff received an invitation in their mailbox, along with a lunch preferences questionnaire and drink order form.

Superhero posters were our main decoration this year. John Wolfe, a local photographer and fellow parent, took pictures of everyone decked out in a customized superhero cape and mask from Kid Kapers. I have been eyeing those capes for months and was thrilled that she had time to make a Superman style cape with an “M” for Mann Elementary. It couldn’t have been more perfect. Did you know you could have capes customized? How fun is that?! I love Etsy.

Originally I had planned on using the pictures John took as is, but then I got the great idea (if I do say so myself) to turn them into comic book style posters with advice from each staff member to students. John transformed each photo into a comic book style poster which I used to decorate the hallways, and an 8×10 photo for the classroom doors.

Before I go any further, I want to give a shout out to the Lake Washington School District print shop. I mistakenly assumed they only made black and white copies, but oh no! They print posters, sheets of stickers, labels, color copies, you name it… And all of it is gorgeous, fast, and extremely affordable. The posters were a HUGE hit with the students. In fact, when I was taking them down at the end of the week (while wearing my awesome Supergirl shirt) a little boy said to me, “Why are you taking the posters down? You aren’t a superhero! You are a villan!” For me that was the ultimate compliment. I am so happy everyone enjoyed the superhero theme as much as I did. The moral of the story: If you are planning a school event, be sure to utilize your school district’s print shop.

The Friday before SAW, the students were sent home with “I Think You Are Super Because…” pictures to color for their teacher. On Monday, the students presented the pictures and notes to their teachers, and the room moms came in and put them on the classroom doors along with the 8×10 superhero photo.

We had extra “I Think You Are Super Because…” pictures in the office for students to color. Many of them wanted to make pictures for past teachers, the music teacher, librarians, etc. There was a poster in the stairway letting them know where extra pictures were located.

Now that the groundwork was laid, I focused on the activities for the week, each one being Superhero themed, of course. I used SignUp Genius to coordinate sign ups with the Hospitality Committee and Room Parents for these activities. I made everything look pretty, but I couldn’t have pulled off an event like this without the wonderfully supportive parents at our school.

Monday: POP! Popcorn Bar

We had eight different varieties of gourmet popcorn for the staff to enjoy throughout the day. After listening to feedback from last year’s gourmet popcorn bar, we made half of the flavors sweet, and the other savory. If you have never made gourmet popcorn, don’t be intimidated! You can find all sorts of fabulous popcorn recipes on my Simply Pop! Pinterest board.

Tuesday: Hero Sandwich Lunches

The parents made “boxed” lunches for every staff member at the school. As I mentioned, I included a questionnaire with the invitations asking the following questions:  What is your favorite sandwich? Favorite bread? What do you like on your sandwich? Favorite chips? Favorite salad? Favorite dessert? Favorite drink? Favorite dessert? Any allergies? I asked that the questionnaires be returned by the Thursday prior to Staff Appreciation Week. Once I received them, I forwarded the answers to the parents who signed up to make lunches. Once again, the parents blew me away with their creativity!

TIP: The lunches at our school are staggered from 11:15-12:30 so this year I sorted the lunches by time on six foot tables at the back of the room. Sorting the lunches by time made it a snap to find the lunches, and having them on a table in the back (instead of the lunch tables) gave the teachers and staff plenty of space to eat their lunch.

Wednesday: ZAP! Super Charged Breakfast

I included drink orders with the ZAP! Breakfast Invitation, and asked that the teachers and staff return them the Thursday before Staff Appreciation Week. They had the choice of a Super Charged Smoothie (berry smoothie) or a drink from Starbucks. The drink orders were printed on 8.5×11 sticker page and cut to size. (This is SO much easier than trying to line them up on shipping labels!)

Purchasing lattes for the entire staff is a huge portion of the Hospitality Committee budget each year. The week before SAW, Starbucks offered a $5 for $10 Gift Card Groupon. I couldn’t have timed it better if I’d tried! Each person was limited to one Groupon, so I sent an email to the entire Hospitality Committee and asked them to please purchase a Groupon and email me the certificate. (I reimbursed them out of my budget.) I also did this earlier in the year with an Everything Party Groupon, knowing that I would be buying decorations, silverware, plates, etc. for Staff Appreciation Week. I was able to reduce my expenses by about $150 this year using Groupons!

I took 1/2 the orders to the Starbucks about a mile away, and 1/2 to the other Starbucks a mile the other way. (Remember, I live in Seattle. We’re surrounded.) I pre-paid for all of the drinks to make pick up easy for the 4 parents picking up the 40 lattes the next morning. The baristas loved the sticker labels. They quickly and easily made the pre-ordered drinks and attached the labels. The drinks and breakfast were waiting for the teachers/staff at 7:50am. I wanted them to have time to enjoy their breakfast before school started.

Thursday: “Soup”er Luncheon

March in Seattle is typically grey and rainy, perfect soup weather. I couldn’t resist having a SOUPer luncheon. Despite the fact that it was gorgeous and sunny (the complete opposite of soup weather) the lunch was a success. We had a wonderful variety of soups (6 varieties for 46 staff members was plenty) in addition to fresh fruit, veggies, and a few treats. I especially liked the “I Think You Are SOUPer” stickers which served as napkin rings, and the “Emergency Hydration” drinks. You can’t read the back of the water bottles, but they say, “Super powers will activate within 10 minutes of drinking.”

Friday: Dangerous Dessert Bar

I have paid close attention to what the teachers and staff eat at our Hospitality Committee events over the last year. The overwhelming majority are very healthy eaters and eat very few sweets. In fact, at the Super Charged Breakfast this year, the majority of the food I asked for was fresh fruit and Kind Bars. Yes, there were a few dozen muffins and bagels, but those were eaten much more slowly.

So, I created a dessert table with a mix of bite sized treats and traditional favorites provided by some amazing dessert vendors! For those that didn’t want a cupcake (say what?!) we had gorgeous macarons from The Splendid Sweet Shoppe. I have the utmost admiration for anyone who can make a beautiful macaroon. These were amazing and so colorful!

Sweet Tweets made AWESOME super cookies with an M instead of S. I was seriously impressed. I used some of them for the dessert table, but the majority  of the cookies were wrapped in cellophane bags and tied with a “Thank You!” tag to take home along with their “Superhero Award” to enjoy later.

The highlight of the dessert table was definitely the cake pops from Decadent Cake Pops. The owner, Jaime, and I met at our children’s preschool a few years ago. I have ordered cake pops from her in the past and my girls love them. Last year I discovered that both of my girls are highly sensitive to gluten, dairy, and eggs which excludes them from all of the fun birthday treats children have at parties and/or bring to school. I asked Jaimie if she could make me gluten free/vegan cake pops, and she did! I now keep a stash of GF/Vegan cake pops in my freezer at all times. When anyone in my daughter’s classes bring in a birthday treat, I pull out a cake pop and send it with them to school. Cake pops are my new favorite thing. These superhero cake pops were the normal variety, but it’s nice to know there are delicious and fun options for those of us dealing with food allergies.

Speaking of food allergies, Wickedly Whipped made Wonder Woman Rice Krispy pops (yes, those are real!) for everyone, but especially for those staff members that cannot eat gluten. Who am I to deprive someone of treats? Who doesn’t love Rice Krispy treats?! Unfortunately the mail man didn’t deliver them in time for lunch on Friday but they did arrive before school got out for the day so I whipped up (get it? ha!) a quick display of take home treats for the staff.

The teachers and staff also took home a Superhero Award at the end of the week. They are after all, the most amazing superheros I know.

There you have it! Superhero themed Staff Appreciation Week. It was epic. I have no idea what I am going to do next year. LOL!”

Here’s what Lauren said about planning the party- “I was thrilled when Katherine told me she wanted to do a Pony Party for Mazie’s 2nd birthday. It’s always fun to work with creative clients who bring ideas to the table and get just as excited as you are about the planning. The afternoon turned out to be absolutely beautiful. A bale of hay with a saddle and a custom chalkboard print greeted guests by the front door. There were pony rides for the kids, bobbing for apples, pin the tail on the pony and lasso the pony. Parents sipped on “kick up your heels” spiked lemonade and had plenty to snack on… BBQ drummettes, chicken salad sandwiches, coleslaw and potato salad. There were plenty of sweet to go around: caramel corn, caramel apples, cotton candy, cookies by Silly Gilly Desserts and a beautiful ruffled cake… a must-have from Katherine from Cake Goddess. Katherine, a talented photographer, took great pictures to capture her little girl’s special day and feature all of the printables I designed for her.”

Here’s what Christy said about planning the party- “My Grandpa, or ‘Pappa’ as my kids call him, lives to play baseball. Every year my grandparents fly from Seattle to Mesa, Arizona for the winter specifically for my Grandpa to be able to play on his softball team. At 79, he sometimes plays three games a day! It’s his love of the game that inspired me to throw him this 79th Vintage Baseball Birthday party.

This party was created on a very small budget with only a few days to plan, so I borrowed as much decor as possible, kept the sweets simple and made the most of the printables!

Glass Coke bottles and striped straws with our mini baseball pennants in a vintage soda crate made for picture perfect and cost effective party favors.

With no time to bake and a tight budget, the dessert table treats included Twinkies with a bit of red icing that became “hot dogs on a stick”, Starbucks cake pops and Golden Oreos dipped in white Wilton Candy Melts and piped with red buttercream to resemble baseballs and of course Cracker Jacks and Popcorn which are a must have for any baseball event. I was able to pick up popcorn bags at my local craft store as well as a roll of brown packaging paper for a table runner and red polka dot balloons which added a lot of bang for my buck. I reused some paper fans I had from last years fourth of July celebration as well. Red and white carnations from the local grocery store rearranged into a baseball like centerpiece with color coordinated ribbon trim provided a centerpiece for under ten dollars.

Overall the party was inexpensive, stress free and fun! Most importantly my grandfather had a great time and was able to enjoy a little baseball even though his playing season was over for the year.”

WORLD CHILDREN’S DAY PARTY DETAILS:

This is what Sofia said about planning the party- “The challenge this time was to create a very colorful, vibrant and more healthy party for the World’s Children Day and that would also be affordable. This party was both for girls and boys, so we had be very careful choosing the colors, the whole design and styling, that should be appropriate for both genders.

Our first idea was to make a rainbow party, but it’s such a common theme that we decided to do it with a different color scheme.

In the backdrop we used crepe paper streamers in the same colors as the stationary and in the table front we used some banners from the original template that included fruits and vegetables.

To display some of the food we also used wooden crates that we painted in white and filled with straw.

In this party we served strawberries in little pink dotted goblets over a flower punch from the party template, bananas in which we painted a little eye to make them look like dolphins and watermelon served in sticks (like if they were ice creams), stuck on half limes to give color and a more healthy look.

The sweets included carrot cake, chocolate spoons, popcorns and a delicious and gorgeous lemon cake filled with strawberry cream decorated with fruits and straw.

We also served sausage croissants, smoked salmon wraps and ham paste sandwiches cut in a pear and apple shape.

The drinks included raspberry lemonade and regular lemonade too with basil leaves.

The result was a fun and colorful party to celebrate Children’s Day and all the kids that participated had a great time!”

Party Details:

This is what Gerri and Carole said about planning the party-

“We’re very excited to exclusively share this delightful “Book Party” we styled for a little girl, Dunya, who turned 7 last month.

Dunya requested a dessert table featuring two of her favourite things – (1) books, and (2) the colour blue! So, the Little Birdie girls set out to create something elegant, yet appealing for a young crowd, a table incorporating books and book-related items (e.g. bookworms, plaques, owls, typewriter-like font, etc.). We were keen to celebrate Dunya’s favourite colour, light blue, yet with a girly twist.

Backdrop
The backdrop was designed by Li-Ann from Ham&Pea Design&Paperie after we sent her an example of the chocolate wrappers we had designed for Dunya, which used the ombre blue stripes with clean strips of white in between. We love it, and so did Dunya!

Sweets
Jen from A Little Slice of Heaven made the most gorgeous “bookworm biscuits” – aren’t they wonderful? Jen made the beautiful little bookworms with darling flowers, sitting atop three separate books (stacked slightly askew to resemble a natural pile of books) in the ombre blues from our colour palette. We also loved the elegant “D”-plaques she created for the delicious vanilla bean cupcakes. Jen also makes to most delicious coconut ice – she created soft blue and white coconut ice especially for this table.

Coby from Taart made the vanilla bean custard tarts adorned with fresh blueberries, lemon meringue tarts, and lime and coconut slice.

Trish from Marche du Macaron made the fabulous blue macarons (based on our colour palette) in her famous decadent salted caramel flavour.

Candies for the table included blueberry clouds, bookworm lollies, blue raspberry bon bons and toffee bon bons.

We covered boxes of Junior Mints in beautiful light blue paper and affixed a personalised “Dunya’s Library” sticker we designed to each box. Junior Mints are a favourite sweet of Dunya’s mummy!

Cake
Dunya’s Aunty made her the cake of her choice – a scholarly owl sitting on top of a big pile of books.

Details and Stationery
We believe the delight is in the details. For this dessert table we covered hardcover books in coordinating light blue opalescent paper to use as risers. The same paper was used to cover the boxes of Junior Mints and other risers.
As described above, we designed a personalised sticker for the wrapped Junior Mints – “Dunya’s Library”. We also created coordinating personalised “Thank You” stickers for favour boxes.

The food labels incorporated a fanciful plaque design to off-set the “serious” typewriter and stamp font (as you would find in a library!).

The stickers coordinated perfectly with the invitations we designed for Dunya’s party guests. These were based on the old-school-style library card, and included this dessert table’s signature ombre blue design to coordinate with the blue theme.

Creating this special dessert table for Dunya was an enjoyable and rewarding experience for us. We are delighted to be able to share this with you exclusively, and we hope you enjoy looking through the photos we took.”

DINER PARTY DETAILS:

Here’s what Michelle said about the party- “Father’s Day is one of my favorite holidays of the year. A day for me to celebrate my husband who is the best Father I could ever hope for to our 3 sons and not to mention a wonderful husband. This year’s celebration was a challenge for me because I had less than 2 weeks to plan it. With so much going on lately, June was here before I knew it and I still hadn’t thought of a theme. Finally, the Hubby and I decided on a 50s Diner style party. So with that “Dad’s Diner” was created and I started right away with designing the necessary stationary and backdrop to allow myself time for printing and assembly.

First stop, Hobby Lobby and Home Goods where I found the diner style signs, Coca-Cola paraphernalia, and the Gas pump. I lucked out when I found a retro Coca-Cola napkin dispenser, trays and vintage car favor boxes on a resale party supply Facebook group page. It was all finally coming together but I kept thinking how cute it would be if I could find a retro dinette set to add to the ambiance, and luck would have it I found one on Craigslist! It needed a bit of TLC, but nothing my wonderful hubby couldn’t handle, so I got it for a steal! Nothing like a good deal to get the party planning fire started!

My boys took our guests orders and the hubby grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. Dinner was served in burger baskets with chips and pasta salad. For refreshments we offered the choice of lemonade or bottled Coca-Cola. There were donuts, cookies, cherry pie, apple pie, cupcakes and tons of candy to choose from for dessert. We had a blast and best of all, the Hubby had a great time!”

Party Details:

This is what Jen said about planning the party-

“Our “Jewel of the Nile” recently turned 8 and invited her friends to come celebrate– Egyptian style. I have to admit, I was thrilled when Kaylee asked for an Egyptian spa theme. She’s the 3rd in a line of women who are obsessed with all things Ancient Egypt. (I did a study abroad there while in college and have longed for the day when some of my ‘ancient’ souvenirs could be unearthed from the depths of storage boxes for a fun purpose!) She was a gorgeous Cleopatra for Halloween earlier this year, and her costume was a natural springboard for the color palette for this celebration.

As you can imagine, finding party ideas and/or premade/packaged decor for an Egyptian spa party was beyond difficult. Pinterest, generally a collective wealth of brilliant ideas from talented curators, left me grasping at straws (more like Papyrus reeds). I basically had to start from scratch, but Anders Ruff was there once again to save the day and designed something amazing for my daughter’s unique celebration.

So how do you plan a unique party theme when there isn’t much to inspire you? Here are a few tips I learned along the way.

#1: Research: Thankfully, I had a little background knowledge of Ancient Egypt I could withdraw from my memory banks from both my study abroad experience in Egypt and my 3 years of teaching about Ancient Egypt as part of our World History class as a 6th grade teacher. But, a refresher course was fantastic for helping me think of clever wording for the invitation & activity stations, deriving an appropriate event color palette & design scheme, and dreaming up creative treats, decorations & favors. Kaylee and I had fun looking at books from our bookshelf, DIY make it/take it books from my teaching resources & scouring the internet for inspiration.

Just one example of how our research paid off and was incorporated into our party design: we discovered that the peacock feather had significance in Ancient Egyptian history, so we used it as the basis for our color palette and incorporated it throughout our party space. Our peacock feathers came from Wholesale Event Solutions (you can order in bulk).

#2: Think outside the box (or should we say pyramid?): If money were no object, I would’ve booked a flight for 8 little girls to Cairo, Egypt. We would’ve caravanned via camel to the base of the Sphinx or an ancient step pyramid or perhaps even traveled a little farther to the Valley of the Kings and set up our party at the foot of King Tut’s tomb. But because money is an object and taking our ‘jewel’ and her friends to see ancient Egyptian antiquities in their country of origin was not an option, I brainstormed ways to bring the ‘ancient’ antiquities to them.

e of my favorite ways we accomplished this was by bringing in costumes for the girls to wear (which also doubled as a take-home favor). I found an Ebay seller (see vendor credits) that would give me a bulk rate discount on Cleopatra costumes. (See below for details on “Cleopatra’s Closet”.)

#3: Don’t be afraid of a little DIY work: So, 6 ft. Egyptian columns aren’t in your price range? Make your own at a fraction of the cost! (The columns I looked at were several hundred dollars a piece without shipping costs factored in.) You already did step #2, right? You thought outside the box; now you’re ready to work!

I knew I wanted tall Egyptian style columns as a part of my daughter’s dessert table display. A quick trip to Home Depot & the Dollar Store later, about 30 minutes worth of time, and about $16 in materials and I had some Egyptian columns! I made mine from cardboard cement forms (round tubes that come in several diameters), some black insulation tubing (that already had double sided adhesive), gold spray paint, a roll of wrapping paper (Dollar Tree) and some cheap gold chargers. Easy peasy.

Another DIY project was the chandelier that hung above the dining table. Now this was really inexpensive and easy to make. Materials included: two different sized embroidery hoops, leftover gold spray paint, scrapbook paper punched circles, fishing line, gold ribbon & peacock feathers (Wholesale Event Solutions). Believe it or not, I assigned the task of contstructing the chandelier’s frame to my husband. He whipped it out in a matter of minutes, and then I just got to embellish it! I think it adds so much to the decor.

#4: Use your food choices and/or dessert table to tie in the theme: One of the best parts of my job is becoming acquainted with brilliant, talented dessert artists. And when I call them artists, I mean it in every sense of the word. I mean, check out their work below!

From the jaw dropping Egyptian pyramid cake with cartouche & hieroglyphic detailing (4 Kids Cakes) to exquisitely detailed fondant cupcake toppers (Sugar High, Inc.), to intricate lotus cake pops (Maskipops by Adri) & shimmering macarons (Felt & Flour) to scrumptious cookies (Sugary Sweet Cupcakes & Treats) & gorgeous pharaoh & eye of Horus chocolate covered Oreos (Love & Sugar Kisses), plus Pharaoh pretzel rods (Berry Delish), all our desserts tied in with the Egyptian theme.

#5: Coordinate party activities & favors with your theme:

Cleopatra’s Closet:

Most children love to get ‘dressed up’ in character, if a party lends itself to that opportunity. Upon arrival, Kaylee’s friends made a quick stop at “Cleopatra’s Closet” where they picked out a beautiful Egyptian tunic & accessories carefully hung on gold hangers to change into. We tried to make this shopping experience authentic with fun clothing tags on each dress & a store sign made to coordinate by Anders Ruff.
I also used the talents of Anders Ruff to bring in a little more Egyptian flair to both the dessert table and the dining tables. Some of the fun details included an oversized backdrop sign turned into a large scroll banner, a flag bunting designed to look like Egyptian cartouches spelling out “Kaylee” in hieroglyphics. Ornate glass bottles (Via Blossom) were glammed up with Nile Water beverage wraps, gold tassels and metallic gold straws (Little Ink) and drink flags. Place cards were also made to look like cartouches with the girls initials in hieroglyphics. Sucre Shop designed some fresh new patterns on their eco-friendly utensils, perfect for our event.

After the girls had dressed the part, they were whisked away to Kaylee’s beautiful Desert Oasis & Spa where they received the royal treatment. Clever Egypt inspired names were used at each of the spa stations. Fun and child friendly spa products from Moodylicious Children’s Spa were used by each of the guests. I loved the darling labels Anders Ruff created to personalize each of these products. They had facials at “Pharaoh’s Facials,” manicures at “Nefertiti’s Nails,” makeup applied at “Mummy’s Makeup” and hair fixed at “Hatshepsut’s Hairstyling”.

In addition to all of the fun spa activities, we provided some other fun Egyptian themed appropriate activities for the girls.

‘Jewelry’ of the Nile:

Almost every girl I know loves jewelry! Since Kaylee and her friends are often found beading their own necklaces, we thought a “Jewel”ry of the Nile station would be perfect! Do and J of Piggy Bank Parties created the most perfect favor boxes to house the treasured jewelry making essentials. I seriously gasped when I saw the incredible detail work on these King Tut sarcophagus favor boxes. What a fun way to tie in the theme, right? The favor boxes had little gold sachet bags with jewelry elastic, fasteners, beautiful beads and a Nefertiti charm.

At the crafting table, we made a special place for each girl, which included a fun activity coloring page, coordinating crayons & a cartouche image on authentic papyrus for them to add hieroglyphics to using an Egyptian stamp set. The girls loved learning about ancient Eyptian writing and had fun recreating their names.

Favors:

The fun of attending a party is leaving with some fun favors! Favors don’t have to be complex or expensive. We filled some Egyptian pyramid favor boxes, masterfully designed by Piggy Bank Parties with some gumballs from SmashCake Studio. We also sent the girls home with some treats from King Tut, dressed up with some cute treat bag toppers by Anders Ruff.

And finally, so the girls could recreate their spa experience at home, we sent them each home with a personal spa kit (I found the aqua bowls on clearance 2/$1 at Walmart!) full of Moodylicious Children’s Spa products, a cosmetic bag (Dollar Tree), and manicure set (Michaels on sale).”

UNDER THE STARS PARTY DETAILS:

Jenny said this about the party- “I styled this party for my daughter, Audrey’s 11th birthday. She brings so much sparkle to our lives and her personality really shines so a star party was just the perfect theme. Since she is getting older, I wanted to keep the party as girly and sweet as possible while she will still let me. We used several shades of pink, silver and a lot of sparkle in all of the printables and decorations. Everything at the party dealt with stars!

Dinner Table- We set the dinner table under an over hang in the back of our yard. I draped over a dozen strands of twinkle lights over the table and down the wall to create a beautiful, star like mood. Once the sun set, the area truly sparkled. The table was covered with ruffled tablecloth and I used glittered scrapbook paper for the placemats. Each place setting had a takeout box with dinner inside. I glittered wooden utensils and attached them to the box. For the backs of the chairs, I cut out pink stars and used my Cameo Silhouette machine to cut out the girls’ names. I made pedestals out of wooden star cutouts and round boxes for the candles. Pink pompoms in two shades of pink hung over the table.

Dessert Table- The backdrop of the dessert table was a plywood board that I painted with chalkboard paint. I then traced a star that matched the invitation and filled it in with pink colored chalk. Ruffled curtains framed the backdrop. The centerpiece of the table was a two tiered chocolate cake decorated with gingham ribbon and star toppers that matched the other printables. The dessert table consisted of a Milky Way, which was milk bottles decorated with stars that I also cut from my Cameo machine. There were shooting stars, stars in jars with wooden spoons decorated with star jewels, “star”berry cakes in mason jars, clouds (donuts), cupcakes with star suckers, star bars, star marshmallows, star dust and cups of star cookies.

Activities- The girls did many activities including- Shoot for the stars- Using marshmallow guns, the girls shot at stars hanging on a frame I made out of PVC. Each girl got 6 marshmallows and received points for hitting different sized stars. Seeing stars- The girls decorated telescopes with washi tape and pink jewels. Star treatment- the girls did their nails in pink polish of course. I’m a star- Photo booth.

Movie Area- Seeing Stars- Once the sun went down, the girls watched a movie on a big screen set up in the yard. We moved our couch outside and I sewed a bunch of pillows in pink fabrics for the girls to lie on. I made the “star grazing” table for the movie area out of old palates. The candy boxes were wrapped to match the party printables. We had mini cellophane bags of Star Bursts, like a diamond, and little star candies. The girls also snacked on popcorn and chips and took home tubes of pink colored gumballs.

Drink Station- The drinks were set up on an old wagon that we had. Luckily, it had pink wheel rims. The girls picked from “star”berry soda, sparkling soda, lemonade and personalized water bottles. Singing Happy Birthday- I always make a mini “smash cake” for my kids- a tradition from their first birthday. For this party, I did a mini pink ombre cake with star bunting. The girls all had big sparklers that held while we sang.

Favors- I made star t-shirts with the word shine on them for each of the girls again using my Cameo. A framed signed told that girls that Audrey thanked her lucky stars for having them as friends. Audrey had such a fun birthday- it was beautiful, girlie and a little bit of glam- just like her.

Printables were done with patterns and shades of pink. Invitations, food labels, water bottle wraps, candy box covers, and more can be found here.”

 Back to School Party Details:

This is what Kara Abrahamsen said about planning the party-

“Theme
My daughter Lilly absolutely LOVES books and reading! So I thought it would be a perfect idea to do a book exchange party to get her and her friends in the spirit to start back to school. The concept of the book exchange was for every child to bring 5 used books they are finished with and then they would get to go home with 5 new ones!

Décor
My daughter helped design all of the printables for this party and had so much fun doing so! Her favorite was the worm!

Dessert Table – I cut an adorable chevron table runner in half and used it to add a bit of color. I used a chalkboard for the backdrop and added the pennant banner and decorations. The awesome vintage desk was my grandfather’s desk from when he was a little boy. The kids loved taking turns sitting at the desk and found it funny that it was once a ‘real’ desk! I used book pages to make paper chains and paper fans throughout the party and my daughter was able to help make these (Free and Cute)! The sack lunches sat in an old picnic basket. I used a roll of craft paper to wrap books used throughout the table. I found some wooden glasses at Hobby Lobby and painted them red to set up throughout the party! The vintage globe belongs to my daughter and has been handed down a few generations now….I loved the color it brought to the table. The amazing fondant cupcake toppers were made by Your Cupcake Story and the adorable mini cookies were made by The Talented Cookie.

Library/Picnic Area – For the library I reused an old dollhouse I found at an antique store for my daughters 7th birthday party décor. I laid tablecloths on the ground for the picnic and added a beautiful red chevron quilt that belongs to my grandmother.

Party Details
We invited the guest with Library Card invitations to get them in the mood! I designed the invitations to look like old library cards that use to be in the front cover of books! I cut standard 5×7 envelopes in half to slip the invites into and then wrapped with twine!

Once the kids arrived they put their books in the Library and then played some fun outdoor games while waiting for everyone else to arrive.

Then it was time to grab their sack lunches and sit down on the blankets for an outdoor picnic. Once they were finished eating the healthy stuff it was time for sweets…of course the best part, especially when the sweets are so cute!

While they were eating sweets and drinking lemonade I passed out their Library Cards. The cards had 5 blank spots on them for stamps to go in each spot every time they picked out a book. Once everyone had picked out their books it was time to make bookmarks at the bookmark station and then fill their goody baskets with school supplies and sweets!

Everyone had such a blast and went home ready for school to start back up”!!
